Taxis and hire vehicles

The Victorian Taxi Directorate (VTD) regulates the taxi and hire vehicle industries and issues Driving Instructor Authorities. The VTD is part of the Public Transport Division of the Department of Transport.

What's new in taxis & hire vehicles

• New taxi driver protection screens approved for the Toyota Avalon, Toyota Hiace/Commuter and the Holden Commodore/Statesman/Caprice vehicles.

• Peak service taxis can operate 24 hours a day during the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, on Melbourne Cup Day and Oaks Day.

• New initiatives to improve Victoria's taxi services include the issue of over 500 new taxi licences to meet demand, a fare increase of 6.1 per cent, more protection for driver bailments and a Multi Purpose Taxi Program reform package.
