Information on this page
Fare increase
Taxi fares across Victoria increased by 6.1 per cent on 13 December 2008. This increase adds an extra $1.20 to the average metropolitan taxi fare of $19.60 for a 10km trip.
The fare increase, as part of a
broader reform package, is to make sure taxi drivers are adequately paid, and operators are assisted with higher operating costs and funding safety measures such as driver protections screens.
Prepaid fares
Prepaid fares for all taxi trips in Victoria between 10 pm and 5 am were introduced from 1 October 2008. See
Prepaid taxi fares for more information and tools for estimating fares.

Multiple hirings
Multiple hirings are permitted throughout Victoria with the consent of all passengers.
A multiple hiring involves:
- two or more people who are unacquainted travelling in the taxi from a common starting point
- the first and subsequent hirers consent to another person also hiring the taxi
- the hirers' destinations are in the same general direction
- each hirer paying no more than 75 per cent of the fare showing on the taxi meter at their destination.
Tolls & airport parking fees
CityLink and EastLink tolls
All taxis in Victoria must display an approved label showing authorisation for the driver to charge CityLink and EastLink tolls detailed below. The tolls are in addition to the metered fare. These tolls are effective from July 1, 2009.
*All prices are GST inclusive.
Hirers must be given the choice of using or not using CityLink or EastLink if it is one of the route options for their trip.
Where a CityLink or EastLink toll is incurred during a multiple hiring, it must be charged to, or shared between, each hirer in equal proportions or as otherwise agreed between the hirers. Total tolls collected by the driver must not exceed the toll amount for the trip.
For trips beyond 80 kilometres of the principle post office, the negotiated fare is to be inclusive of any toll incurred.
Melbourne Airport taxi parking fee
All taxis must display labels authorised by the Victorian Taxi Directorate indicating that the driver is allowed to charge the passenger the appropriate airport parking fee. No airport parking fee can be charged unless the appropriate labels are fitted. A label must be placed on the taxi dashboard and additional labels may be placed on the inside of rear doors, space permitting.
Melbourne taxis
Regional taxis
Regional taxis are allowed to pick up passengers at Melbourne Airport on a pre-booked basis only. The airport parking fee for regional taxis is $3.00 to be passed on to the hirer.
The driver must not charge the airport parking fee to any passenger arriving at Melbourne Airport.
